The Power of Small Steps

The Power of Small Steps

Spread the love

Our world is so big and so broken that some days I can’t see how my paltry efforts make a difference. Some days my dreams seem so out of reach that I don’t see how I will ever get there.

All too often I feel overwhelmed because there are too many options, too many needs, too many worthy causes and I don’t know which one to choose.

In those moments I remind myself that all I need to do right now is take one small step.

The power of small steps

  • One small step can keep me moving toward a goal instead of grinding to a halt in fear.
  • One small act of kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
  • One small choice to do something can get me out of the rut and help me bumble my way into the calling God has for me.

Jesus reminded us how much even small acts matter when he said:

And if, as my representatives, you give even a cup of cold water to a little child, you will surely be rewarded. Matthew 10:42 TLB

Every cup of water counts. It makes a difference, no matter how small, in this big world. Do you believe it?

Here are some quotes that inspire me when I don’t feel like my small efforts make a difference. I hope they will inspire you to take your own small steps.

If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way. ~ Martin Luther King

Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world. ~ Desmond Tutu

Kind words do not cost much. Yet they accomplish much. ~ Blaise Pascal

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does. ~William James

Begin somewhere. You cannot build a reputation on what you intend to do. ~Liz Smith

I don’t have to change the world to touch it. ~ Mark Tabb

Great things are done by a series of small things brought together. ~Vincent Van Gogh

And one more for the many times when your small acts of kindness seem to go unnoticed…

People are often unreasonable and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are honest, people may cheat you.
Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.
Give your best anyway.
~ Mother Teresa

  1. My favorite line: “Every cup of water counts.” I need to remind myself of that daily.

  2. Some days one cup of water is about all we can handle. But it still counts.
