When I am Afraid

When I am afraid, I will trust in you. Psalm 56:3

I was not sure he would return. My husband had gone to lead a Bible Study in a secret church, in a place where following Jesus was illegal. The little flock that gathered every week to hear the word was relentlessly brave. They would not be stopped, even amongst recent rumors of police raids.

We had been warned by a friend. Before he left, my husband showed me once again where our passports and money were kept in case I needed to leave the country without him.

The silent implication wrapped its way around my heart like a choke hold. If I am taken, you know what to do.

We had counted the cost before coming to this place. We were not blindly playing a fool’s game. Our lives had been laid down already in the privacy of our hearts.

The next five hours seemed interminable. I busied myself with the normalcy of feeding the children, bathing them, reading bedtime stories. After they were tucked in asleep, I went downstairs and got on my knees.

When I am afraid, I will trust in you. You have my husband in your hands. You are with him. And you are with me. I trust you, Lord.

The sound of the heavy latch on the door startled me out of my prayer-worrying.

My husband had returned safely home, hungry hearts fed one more time with the Word, fears overcome by trust.

Lord, when I am afraid, help me trust in you. Make me brave and courageous. Amen.
