God Was In the Details

God Was In the Details

Spread the love

My friend agreed to host a high-school Chinese student for the school year. She had had a young Chinese girl in her home before and was looking forward to this experience also. She had even made a trip to China to visit this student after she returned home.

However, just days before the new student’s arrival, things changed.  My friend is a single lady and the Chinese committee preferred the student not be in a solo parent home. Would my friend, instead, agree to a Korean student?

It seems the Korean committee was okay with a single-person household. After thought and prayer, my friend agreed to the change. The student was to arrive on the same afternoon our neighborhood association had its annual picnic.  We all had the pleasure of meeting this lovely, young lady.

So, how was God in the details of this unexpected change? In ways that amazed! My friend happens to be an artist, a writer and a painter who loves God. She loves music, cooking, nature, and people. She discovered surprisingly that her new house guest also loves to paint, to cook, the outdoors and music, and furthermore, that she is also a Christian.

Our biggest joy, though, was when a new, neighborhood Korean family showed up at the picnic! We had no idea they had just moved in. The student and the family had an immediate rapport and I can only imagine the unexpected excitement of finding fellow Koreans practically next door.

This story made me think about times in my life when events could only be deliberate, divine intervention. Times of supernatural peace in disturbed situations; money arriving in strange ways when sorely needed; unexpected, but welcome, affirmations.

Each of us has felt this love, mercy, and grace of God, I’m sure. I smile big and wide at knowing God is in the simple details of our lives. Nothing is too small for Abba to address on our behalf.

I respect and admire my friend’s decision to open her home and her life in this way. A year promising challenges yet rewards.

For I know the plans I have for you…       -Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so must you love one another.                  -John 13:34 NIV
