Being Thankful Despite of Health Issues and Hard Times

Spread the love

I’ve recently been struggling with a few health issues. Not a new thing for me. From the start, even as a child, I have experienced many health problems. I have a lot of chronic conditions, and have had a lot of injuries and illnesses. All of this is to say that there are times when I’m amazed and thankful for the strong spirit God has given me, and also incredibly sad and even angry when I let it get to me. I start to think, “Why did you give me this body?” But He did, and in growing closer to Him I’ve learned to be thankful in all things.

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus
1 Thessalonians 5:18

When challenged, my attitude can get the best of me. But that’s when I need to pray again, center myself, and bring myself back to Him, to what’s really important. I know there will come a day when I don’t have these struggles.

“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” 3 John 1:2

So what does He want me to do in the meantime? This week, as I was treated in the emergency room again I prayed over everyone working on me. Every nurse, technician, and doctor. Every receptionist, clerk, and parking attendant. I asked God to:

  • bring peace to their lives
  • bless them in the work lives
  • help the see the valuable jobs they do
  • help them feel how cherished they are
  • bless them in their personal lives
  • help them work through the struggles they face, even as they help us with our health problems

Praying this way helped me feel as if there was a purpose for my hospital visit, beside the obvious one. It helped me feel as if every thing I experience can be turned into positive work for God. Maybe He’s able to use me in some way. Wouldn’t it be great to know that while we were being treated we could be of use to God?
