The start of a new year always means something special. We celebrate New Year’s in a big way in this world, and I like to think that it’s because of this concept of starting over. God gives us so many second (third, fourth…) chances and the start of a new year really underscores the point that with Him we always have the opportunity to start now to create the life we want, to make amends, to create something new.

The new year is also a time when I start meditating on a new verse or two. I like verses that will keep me focused on the big picture.

Here are some I like:

Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.

Psalm 98:1

Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;  to be made new in the attitude of your minds;  and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Ephesians 4:22-24


There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.

Proverbs 23:18
