Be Love: My 2018 Phrase

Be Love: My 2018 Phrase

Happy New Year!

I always enjoy getting to write the first post of the New Year for Putting on the New. It allows me to share my phrase for the year. But more than that, it allows me to reflect and pray on what my phrase should be. As the years have passed I’ve noticed that my focus has become more outward toward others. And as a Christian, that’s exactly how it should be. Yet, I know I haven’t crossed the finish line.

So this year I’ve decided my 2018 phrase will be “Be Love.” I want to embody this with everyone I come into contact with. Whether that contact be face-to-face or over other means of communication. 🙂

But I’m not 100% sure how to do this, so I turned to my Bible for guidance. Here are 3 main ideas and verses I took away:

  • Start with God. If I start with God, then I know He will help me with the rest. The Bible tell us what happens when we seek Him first. It’s a promise with a condition. So I’m starting the year with a promise to be loving toward Him first.

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”
– Deuteronomy 6:5 KJV

  • Be a friend. You ever meet those people who put you at ease and immediately you want to be their friend? The world needs more people like them. I know it can be trying to be like that if that’s not your natural inclination, but they’re the embodiment of love and what could be better than that?

“A friend loveth at all times…”
-Proverbs 17:17 KJV

  • Bless, do good, and pray. This verse made me pause. It gives a little more instruction. Besides loving the people the world deems unlovable, you are to bless others, do good when it’s the hardest, and pray for those who would wish you harm. It’s a tall order and I’m sure I’ll have plenty opportunities to succeed or fail, but if I’m going to continue to walk this journey of faith, it’s something I need to be intentional about.

“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you…”
-Matthew 5:44 KJV

I’m praying that this phrase will help me look inward and weed out those unChrist-like feelings I’m harboring. I don’t just want to say I’m a Christian, I want to be one.

What say you, friends? How would you “Be Love?” What verse will help you with this?

  1. Toni, this really stood out to me from your post: “Bless, do good, and pray.” If we could do these three things consistently, think of the lives that would be touched! I might just make this the mantra of my 2018! Thank you for the inspiration!

  2. I zeroed in on “Start with God.” This is a concept God has been drilling me into me for years–and I’m such a slow learner! I’m wanting it to become a habit to check with the Holy Spirit before I make a move with my own plans.
