Don’t Eat the Gift Wrap

Don’t Eat the Gift Wrap

I was rushing around, trying to get everything on my list before I went home to prepare for the Church Christmas party we’d be hosting in a few hours.  I’d snapped up pretty much everything on my list, but as I started up my car to leave the parking lot, sudden hunger pangs hit me. My empty stomach faithfully reminded me that I’d never had breakfast, and now it was after 1:00.  I was hungry!!  I thought through all the things I’d just bought to see if I had something in the car I could munch on to curb my hunger, but I realized everything I’d bought was totally inedible…almost.  Ground decaf coffee, sugar, dog treats, garbage bags, parchment paper, lamp shades, suction hooks, gift wrap…nope, none of those were remotely tempting.  But then I remembered…chips!  I’d bought chips!  They’d been right near the cash register, on sale, and I’d snatched a few bags to take home to my girls and husband. I put the car back in park, jumped out and grabbed the chips from my trunk.  As I put a few in my mouth, I thought about how ludicrous it would have been to try and fill my hunger with any of the other things loaded in my trunk.  Sugar?  Garbage bags?  Gift Wrap?  No, all of those things would have been disgusting and I wouldn’t have even gotten them down my throat, most likely.  But ironically, isn’t that what so many people are doing right now…trying to fill their spiritual hunger with things that just won’t fill their true need?  Especially at Christmas, it can become so clear that the emptiness inside us can never be filled with mere things…or even by people.  All those presents wrapped beneath the tree, all those holiday parties and family get-togethers cannot fill the void within us (no matter what those sweet, well-intentioned holiday movies may portray).  No, none of the “gift wrap” of life here on earth can ever take the place of the one true Gift we were made to receive, love, and be nourished by…Jesus, our Savior.   So this season, make sure you’re not “eating the gift wrap” and missing the true nourishment your soul needs…Jesus himself.  Let your hunger be met by the One who created you for himself.  He is all the fullness we will ever truly need…at Christmas, and every day of the year.

Kristin Bunting About Kristin Bunting

Kristin wishes you could pull up a chair, enjoy a cup of coffee, and talk with her about how amazing Jesus is. For 33 years she has walked with her Savior, and each year is a new adventure in learning how He is always "Enough" for her, no matter what the circumstance. Kristin is wife to one loving small-church pastor, and never ceases to be amazed at the 3 daughters God has given them to raise. Her one-day dream is to write a book for women, chronicling her walk with Jesus and encouraging them to never quit pursuing the God who loves them.

  1. I love this, Kristin! First of all, I can relate with putting the car in park and running to the trunk to find some food! But even more than this, it’s tempting to turn to material things for fullness this time of year. May we never forget that it will never fill us and continue to turn to the One who brings lasting satisfaction!
