25th Year of Commitment

25th Year of Commitment

Tomorrow I leave for the north woods of Wisconsin to my son’s home to ‘kid watch’ seven kids while he and his dear wife fly to Cancun to celebrate twenty-five years of love as man and wife. Once he laughingly told me he didn’t know how they had made it! I just smiled. Surely he knows we all have wondered.

Three years ago, I celebrated twenty-five years with a good man also. Six months later he went to live with Jesus, but let me share with you some of the vows we wrote for our service. They are all about love, which was Jesus’ last command for us as believers and the season we lovingly celebrate just now at Christmas time.

Jude: We love because God loves us. Love comes from God and God is love. IJohn 4:7

Conrad: Love is a choice and a commitment. Choose to love the Lord your God and commit yourself to Him. Deut 30:20

Jude: Love is an action and not just an emotion. …love not with words or tongue, but with action and truth. IJohn 3:18

Conrad: Love is a skill. Dear Wife/Friends, let us practice loving each other, for love comes from God. IJohn 4:7

Jude: Love is a habit. Let us continue to love each other with true Christian love. Heb 13

In our fractured and broken world, to choose to love is not just a random act of kindness. It is a radical choice. Possible only through our Heavenly Father.

Comments

  1. Beautiful words, Jude, and a great reminder that love does triumph. In our world where hate seems to reign we need to remember the love of God conquers all. Jesus said, “Be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.”

  2. Thanks for these words and for sharing your heart, Jude. I echo Barbara’s words: The love of God conquers all. Thanks for reminding us that love is best demonstrated through action.

  3. Brides and grooms think the stars in their eyes will sparkle forever. They will, but in order to see something sparkle, the light has to wink out momentarily so it can flash out again. So many couples give up during those seasons of darkness. If they choose to love, their light will steadily return.

  4. Your words that the love of God conquers all are most memorable.

  5. How wonderful for us to think about God overcoming the world!

  6. Stacey, love and prayer are two of the most powerful forces in the world aren’t they?

  7. Linda, I like your analogy and would that we all stay strong in those seasons of darkness.
