“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” -John 14:26

Sometimes I feel alone. Like no one understands the dreams I have, the stresses of my reality, and how I struggle to balance the two. I get frustrated. I get anxious. And then God speaks.

God breaks through my turbulent emotions and calms me in a moment. But it wasn’t always this way. Years ago, I couldn’t hear the voice of God. It was just me, wading through the muddy waters of life. I was alone, or so I thought.

Then one day in church, I heard a question that changed my life forever. The pastor turned to the congregation and simply asked, “Do you know that God can speak to you?”

I was shocked. God would speak to me?

Yes. And he will speak to you too. John 14:26 shows us that not only can God speak to us, but that was his intention from the very beginning.

As followers of Christ, we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us. We literally have God with us, prompting us, teaching us, and encouraging us.

So how do we recognize God’s voice?

We start by reading the Bible.

In order to be able to recognize God’s voice, we have to know his character. We have to know what he thinks, how he speaks, and how he has instructed us to live.

When God speaks, he will either bring a scripture to mind to help you in your time of need, or he will speak something to you that is consistent with his word.

Let me just tell you that if something you hear tears you down, discourages you or makes you afraid, it is not from God. God does not give us the spirit of fear.

God comforts, loves, and has compassion on his children. He will discipline those whom he loves, but he will not condemn us. Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

So know that your Heavenly Father is with you. He will speak to you in your greatest moment of need. You, my friend, are not alone.
