As Time Goes By

As Time Goes By

by Peggy Blann Phifer @pegphifer

Ah, the first day of autumn in the year of our Lord, 2017. What are you doing to celebrate? Are you happy to see the end of summer? Looking forward to cooler temperatures to enjoy being outside without your clothes sticking to your body … and soak in all the glorious fall colors?

I know many who claim that fall is their favorite season, and I guess I can understand that. But for me, not so much.

Oh, I do love watching the hardwoods in this part of Wisconsin change to the yellows, the vivid red of the maple, the dark red of oaks; and driving through the rolling countryside takes my breath away.

And as I walk with my dog through our neighborhood, it’s fun to see the multi-colored chrysanthemums, marigolds, and geraniums they set out around their homes.

On the other hand, as I am in the ‘autumn years’ of my own life, I am not looking forward to what this new season brings.

And I do not do well in the winter.

But I can’t change that, and I don’t have the finances to pack myself up and become a ‘snowbird’ and head for a warmer, drier, climate for a few months.

So, I am reminded of what Paul wrote in Philippians 4:11: “…for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content” and then, in verse 13: “… I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

I will cling to those words until spring, which is MY favorite time of the year, because it holds so much promise.

  1. I love fall!! Glad to see summer end, but like you don’t look forward to winter. But there is beauty in every season if we look for it. Blessings!
