Follow Me

Follow Me

Follow me. Two words that hold much longing in the heart of the modern man who desires to have people following him on his various social media channels. I recently read an article about how far people go to have followers on Instagram. One guy went as far as to create a life he really wasn’t living in order to give a perception that appealed to people who would likely follow him. The life he was showing off was a far cry from the one he was actually living. People seem to be attracted to the glitz and glamour and are impressed by the highlights of people lives.

All of us who share our gifts and talents with the world, find ourselves with this challenge at some point, wanting to be followed. As a believer though, if you want a person to follow you that means you want to lead them somewhere. Whether you are selling them a product or a service, you have the opportunity to lead them to the one who we ultimately follow, Jesus. Because underlining every interaction we have with people is an opportunity to show them Jesus in our unique way. Overt invitations to Jesus may not always necessary but our interactions with them should stir up their curiosity about what is different about us, in a good way.

When Jesus issued the invitation to his disciples to follow him, it wasn’t because he desired to have people following him around and sharing in the highlights of his life. He was intent on leading them somewhere. He desired to radically change their lives. He was calling them to more important jobs, jobs that would involve not just their lives changing but them becoming agents of change.

The follower of Jesus is not absolved of decision making in this process. To follow Christ is to make a serious life changing decision. Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. (Matthew 16:34). His expectation was that they would give up their old ways and put on the new life he was offering them.

This is what we do when we accept Jesus, we become imitators of him. We follow his teachings. We don’t just follow the highlights of his life, we go on a journey with him.

Jesus gives us the assurance that if we follow him, we will not walk in sin. Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(John 8:12). Those who choose to walk with him gain the advantage of walking on an illuminated path. We gain the ultimate value for our decision to follow him. We find the reason for which we were born and become connected to the ultimate source of a fulfilled life.
