Are You a Dreamer?

Are You a Dreamer?

Sunday afternoon, in an attempt to relax, I watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a movie starring Ben Stiller. The main character, Mitty, is a day dreamer. To escape his ordinary life he allowed his imagination to take him on a climb up a snow covered mountain, rescue a beautiful woman and her dog from an exploding building, and speak his mind to his overbearing boss.

Do you suppose on an ordinary day, David sat on a hill watching his sheep and dreamed of the day he’d sling a stone at a giant? Or did Daniel pretend to wrestle lions in his backyard as a boy? Did Peter and Andrew think they might someday get off the fishing boat and travel the countryside with the son of God? How about Mary Magdalene? As a little girl, did she dare to dream of being loved and cared for by her Father?

By the end of the movie Walter Mitty did get to prove himself. He climbed that mountain, won the girl, and spoke his mind.

God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The Bible gives example after example of people who lived simple lives yet stepped up to serve the God of the universe. And God equipped them.

Psalm 139:13-14
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

Sometimes I wonder how God can use someone like me, an everyday kind of person to share his love and salvation. I’m amazed over and over when he gives me opportunity. I’m thankful each time I hear from a reader who says my words spoke to her. And I’m humbled every time God allows me to dream.

I may not be King David, Daniel, Mary Magdalene or even Walter Mitty. But I know I’ve been created by God to dream big and follow after him.

Do you have a dream God has placed on your heart?

  1. I love dreamers (including Walter Mitty. Haven’t seen the movie, but remember the James Thurber original.)
    And I love day-dreaming.
    But most of all, I love people who cheer the dreamers on! Thanks.

  2. Thank you, Lisa. I’ve always been a dreamer, too.
