The Little City

The Little City

“There was a little city, and few men within it: and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwartks against it. Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.” (Ecc.9:14, 15)

Sometimes you work hard, doing your best to take care of all of your obligations, serving the Lord and your family. You become exhausted, using all of your energy and go to bed at night wondering if all that effort was worthwhile. It wouldn’t be so bad if someone—anyone—would give you a little credit for what you did.

Other people get all the attention, and no one notices you at all.

Sometimes it’s hard to go on, isn’t it?

I’ve often wondered about the story of the poor wise man who delivered his city, yet no one remembered him afterwards. What happened to him? Was he discouraged? Was he disheartened? Or did he feel satisfied that his idea was successful?

The Bible doesn’t say.

We do read in Matthew 10:28 that God notices when a sparrow falls, and if God cares about him, how much more God cares for you and me. “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.”

Maybe no one but God will ever notice what we do for Him. When no one else cares, we must remember that our work for God contributes to His kingdom and whether anyone else notices, is not important.

We are wise to remember that God knows—and cares.
