Be Awesome to Somebody

Be Awesome to Somebody

Spread the love

I want to tell you about somebody that inspires me, and I hope he will inspire you, too. I don’t know him personally, only through social media, but he’s an example of what we all need to do. I spotted him on Instagram and his photos and mission have moved me to tears.

His name is Mark Bustos, and he’s a hair stylist in New York. He spends his day off giving haircuts to the homeless. He photographs them, and as he shares their pictures he often adds the story behind it. For this photo:

Andre, 49, limped over to me slowly, with a cane in hand, and a cap covering his overgrown hair. While I was in the middle of another haircut, he lingered beside me and reluctantly lifted his cap off of his head, just enough to show me the bald spot he has been hiding. It’s been months since his last haircut and months since he has felt confident enough to walk around without his cap on. With limited daylight available, he was second in line for his haircut, but I knew exactly what needed to be done. I picked up the pace and got him in just in time. He proceeded to tell me his story and shared with me the chain of unfortunate events that caused his homelessness…. #BeAwesomeToSomebody

Yes, that’s right, his hashtag is #BeAwesomeToSomebody. Don’t you love that?

Here’s what else I love. In taking these photos, he is showing us the humanity of these people we tend to walk past on the street, perhaps tossing a dollar their way, perhaps praying over, but not ever looking at in the way that we should. We don’t see them as children of God like we should. But these photos:

Wow. I’m humbled. There are people who talk about doing good and then there’s this guy, he’s doing it.

Seeing his story reminded me of how we all have talents and look at what we can do with them. Mark Bustos’ talent is as a hairstylist, but the purpose he’s living out because of his talent is shining light on people who have been hidden in the shadows too long.

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
